York-Madeira

The red grape variety is an interspecific cross between Labrusca x Vinifera. It is possibly an open-pollinated seedling of Isabella. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis (?), Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid originated in the US state of Pennsylvania. Synonyms are Baldwin's Early, Black German, Bland Madeira, Blue Madeira, Bordo, Canby's August, German Wine, Hydes Eliza, Large German, Marion Port, Monteith, Nador Izabella, Petit Noir Parfumé de Worlington, Port Madeira, Raisin de Vorlington, Shepherd's Port Wine, Small German, Tryon, Wolfe, Wolpe and Worlington. It has been known in Europe since the 1830s. The grape produces dark red wines with a strong alcohol content and a pronounced foxtone. It is also used as a table grape. At the end of the 19th century, the vine also served as a rootstock. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
