The wine region is on the south bank of the Balaton
(Lake Balaton) in Hungary
, Viticulture was demonstrably practiced here in the 1st century. It was formed in 1977 from the better quality areas of Zala County with the river of the same name. Between 1999 and 2012 the wine region was called "Balatonmellék" and since 2012 again Zala. It is divided into the three areas Csáford, Szentgyörgyvár and Mura. The vineyards on brown forest floor cover around 2,200 hectares of vineyards. The main types of white wine are Chardonnay

), the most important red wine variety Zweigelt
