The winegrowing area lies on the south bank of the Balaton
(Lake Balaton) in Hungary
, Viticulture was proven here already in the 1st Century operated. It was built in 1977 from the qualitatively better areas of Zala County with the river of the same name. Between 1999 and 2012 was called the wine-growing area "Balatonmellék" and since 2012 again Zala. It is divided into the three areas Csáford, Szentgyörgyvár and Mura. The vineyards on brown forest soil cover about 2,200 hectares of vineyards. The most important white wines are Chardonnay

) and Zöld Veltelini ( Green Valtellina
), the most important red grape variety Zweigelt
