A joint project by Wolfgang Peck and Josef Umathum in the Burgenland municipality of Andau near the Hungarian border in the wine-growing region Lake Neusiedl (Austria). The municipality of Andau was first mentioned in 1488 under the name Zantho (the old Magyar word means “arable land”). This brand name is used to produce a complete range of Burgenland red, white and sweet wines in the Andau wine cooperative. Wolfang Peck is the managing director and oenologist of the company. So far, 7 million euros have been invested in the cooperative facilities for quality improvement measures, so that today one of the most modern wine companies in Austria is available. The significant logo emblazoned on the bottle label is the Pannonian forest lizard (Zoodoca vivipara pannonica). The animal found here loves the warm, stone-rich soils in the Andauer vineyards and is a symbol for the relationship with ancestry and for the winemakers given natural and for example beneficials careful management from the point of view of Organic viticulture,

The grapes are supplied by almost 50 selected winegrowers who work a total of 70 hectares of vineyards exclusively for the Zantho wines. The well-known wine maker Josef Umathum is responsible for oenology and quality assurance. The winemakers are trained and given advice. Requirements are, for example, at least 3,750 sticks per hectare, maximum yield of 6,000 to 8,000 kg / ha and hand picking. The white varieties Grüner Veltliner, Nutmeg Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc and Scheurebe as well as the red varieties Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch , St. Laurent and Pinot Noir are processed. The aim is to produce wines with a character typical of origin for the international market in sufficient quantities. The specially founded company ZANTHO GmbH is responsible for marketing. The first vintage was vinified in 2001 and bottled in August 2002. In the meantime, 11 wines are produced. In suitable years, berry selection, dry berry selection and ice wines are also pressed. Every single wine is made according to IFS guidelines from the vine to bottling exactly logged and thus 100% traceability guaranteed.
