The north on South Africa Bordering former British colony of Southern Rhodesia (as part of Rhodesia, the former Northern Rhodesia is the Republic of Zambia) became independent in 1980 under the name Zimbabwe. European colonists introduced vines in the second half of the 19th century. But it wasn't until the 1960s that commercial viniculture started. The tropical Climate with heavy rains in summer is not particularly suitable for this. The best vineyards are near the capital, Harare. The white wines of Cape Riesling ( Crouchen ) Chenin Blanc. Clairette. Colombard. Riesling, Moscatel ( Muscat Blanc ) Perel. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, as well as the red wine varieties Alicante Henri Bouschet. Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon. Cinsault. Gamay. Pinotage and Pinot Noir cultured. There are only a few wineries, including Mukuyu Winery and the Bushman Rock Estate, founded in the 1930s.
